RosettaNet Announces Early Completion of First Projects for Electronic Commerce Rules
For Release
June 14, 1998
Santa Ana -- RosettaNet, a newly-formed global organization dedicated to the adoption and
deployment of open and common business interfaces in the IT industry, today announced the rapid
development of the first projects for improved IT supply chain efficiency: catalog information, and
software, memory and laptop technical specifications. These projects are designed to streamline the
search, ordering, shipping, and licensing of information technology products.
Currently, the IT supply chain lacks a common set of interoperability rules. This lack of rules
hinders the flow of critical data, creating misalignments and inefficiencies. In an industry that
places a premium on the capacity to respond rapidly to increasing customer demands, such
inefficiencies can critically impede businesses' ability to serve their customers. RosettaNet,
backed by over 40 member partners currently, seeks to enhance supply chain efficiency by promoting
open content and transaction rules.
"In today's fast-paced IT market place, with the increase in the customers' demand for an
integrated solution of products and services, businesses cannot afford the inefficiencies that
result from supply chain misalignments," said Fadi Chehade, RosettaNet's CEO. "By leading the
adoption, promotion and deployment of open and common global business interfaces, RosettaNet
intends to correct these misalignments by allowing trading partners to efficiently and effectively
exchange information and transactions, thus ensuring that all players in the IT industry will be
able to better serve their customers in the new digital economy."
RosettaNet's first industry projects include:
- Catalog Information - defines the data fields representing general product information;
including product identification numbers, structured short product description, product
classification and product shipping data.
- Software Technical Specification - defines the technical attributes and determines sample
values associated with them for packaged software and software licensing products.
- Memory Technical Specification - defines the technical attributes and determines sample values
associated with them for packaged software and software licensing products.
- Laptop Technical Specification - defines the technical attributes and sample values associated
with laptop computers.
"The increase in connectivity resulting from the growth of the Internet, along with the
complexity and deflationary pricing of IT products, increases the chain's frustration with
proprietary business interfaces and electronic implementations. These complications create a need
for common rules greater than ever before," noted Fadi Chehade. "RosettaNet's focus on establishing
a broad base of support from global IT companies, along with fast execution, will be key factors in
the success of our efforts."
