RosettaNet Press Release
RosettaNet E-Business Standards Organization Expands Asia Operations With New Penang-Based Engineering Center

Consortium Receives Industry Support from Intel, Microsoft, Priority Cargo and Sony

For Release February 16, 2004

PENANG, Malaysia

RosettaNet, the global leader in e-business standards today announced the official launch of the RosettaNet Asia Engineering Center located in Penang, Malaysia. The Center will extend the consortium’s world-class standards development capabilities while allowing the organization to continue to invest in the region by working collaboratively with local firms, multi-national companies and government agencies.

The opening ceremony, officiated by the Chief Minister of Penang, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Dato' Kalsom Abdul Rahman, Chair of RosettaNet Malaysia Steering Council and Deputy Secretary General (Industry) Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), included executive level representation by RosettaNet and the Center’s host and sponsor companies including Intel, Microsoft, Priority Cargo and Sony.

"As a global standards organization, RosettaNet is experiencing tremendous growth -- gaining traction across multiple industries and geographies," said Jennifer Hamilton, RosettaNet President and CEO. "To date, RosettaNet has received broad industry and governmental support in China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan. In establishing the new RosettaNet Engineering Center in Penang, we reaffirm our commitment to Asia and to building the highest quality e-business standards for the world’s most demanding supply chains."

The Asia Engineering Center will play a critical role in the ongoing development of RosettaNet technology. More specifically, the Center will focus on standards engineering and implementation support throughout the region. RosettaNet standards or PIPs ® (Partner Interface Processes ®) are specialized system-to-system XML-based dialogs that define business processes between trading partners, creating a common business language.

Located in commercial space provided by Priority Cargo, the Center will initially house a team of six to eight engineers and an engineering director. RosettaNet is currently committed to sponsoring three full-time Penang-based personnel and will continue to add resources as the operation expands. In addition, RosettaNet member companies including Intel, Microsoft and Sony will provide a total of four on-loan resources for a two-year assignment.

"On behalf of the RosettaNet consortium, I would like to acknowledge Priority Cargo for hosting the offices, furnishings and related business support. I would also like to recognize Intel, Microsoft and Sony for contributing resources to this highly talented team of professionals," said SY Foong, RosettaNet vice president of Asia, on loan from Intel."

"Priority Cargo Sdn Bhd is delighted to host RosettaNet's Asia Engineering Center, as it is indeed great recognition for Malaysia to be chosen as the first Asian hub for the consortium's standards development efforts and technical support function," remarked Dato Dr Kenny Ong, managing director of Priority Cargo. "We are honored to help facilitate such a critical RosettaNet initiative and further support e-business practices in Asia."

RosettaNet’s new engineering hub underscores the organization’s strong commitment to Asia and further extends its earlier Malaysia standards development efforts. For example, in 2002, the consortium introduced the first engineering group outside the United States, comprised of six on-loan engineers representing BCM Electronics Corporation, Globetronics Sdn Bhd, Intel, Microsoft and Mimos Berhad. Due to the success of this initiative over the past two years, including a streamlined PIP production process and related cost-savings, RosettaNet made the decision to expand the scope and duration of the original charter.

The Center’s staff and director will report to RosettaNet vice president of global standards management, Paul Tearnen. Initially, the director will manage the Penang-based engineering team and related standards development activities, and also regularly interface with RosettaNet supply chain partners and solution provider community. Long-term, the director will oversee the start-up of similar engineering hubs throughout Asia, while also managing a growing, geographically diverse engineering team.

Effective immediately, the following engineering professionals are on-loan to RosettaNet by Partner companies: Mr Kamarul Zaman and Mr Lee Ching Hoe, both of Intel, and Mr Cheong Yeow Heng of Sony. RosettaNet staff engineers include Mr Siva Prakash Rao and Ms Yeoh Soo Chin, with a third, Ms Linda Lam, being sponsored by Microsoft.

"The launch of the new Asia Engineering Center is an opportunity for RosettaNet to continue its efforts in delivering best of breed standards that address increasingly complex supply chain issues," said Paul Tearnen, RosettaNet vice president. "Our newly assembled engineering team in Penang, together with RosettaNet’s global standards management organization and Architecture Office, will be instrumental in developing solutions that support the needs our growing user community."

RosettaNet will be holding its 2004 Global Partner Conference at the Raffles City Convention Centre in Singapore on March 30-31. For event details and registration, please visit www.rosettanet.org or www.ebizconnect.com.sg.
